April – World's skinniest skyscraper by SHoP Architects completes in Manhattan
In April, one of the most talked-about and divisive structures in the world was finished.
The second highest structure in the Western Hemisphere and the world's skinniest skyscraper are both SHoP Architects' supertall 111 West 57th Street buildings in New York City. The most read item in April also contained information about the 1,428-foot-tall (435-metre) tower's completion.
SHoP Architects' 111 West 57th Street in New York City, a supertall skyscraper that is both the world's skinniest and the second tallest in the Western Hemisphere, has received its final exterior cladding elements.
The 1,428-foot (435-metre) tower has been completed, and the developers have announced that it is ready for residents to move in.
The SHoP Architects-designed tower, located on what has become known as Billionaires' Row in Midtown Manhattan, reached supertall height in 2018 and has a height-to-width ratio of 24:1, making it the world's skinniest skyscraper.
The tower was announced in 2013 and construction began the following year, but construction was halted in 2017 due to financial constraints. According to SHoP, the tower was built with the strongest concrete available in the world.
There are 60 residences total, with one on each story of the tower and an additional 14 in the nearby landmarked Steinway building.
According to Gregg Pasquarelli, principal at SHoP Architects, "any preconceived preconceptions that our team had about skyscrapers of New York City developments were replaced with an opportunity to achieve something that had never been done before." "We are tremendously thrilled to add a new symbol to our skyline as New Yorkers,"
At its peak, the building tapers to a flat edge. Glass curtain walls face Lower Manhattan to the south and Central Park to the north, while its east and west faces are covered in terracotta tiles with bronze accents. Studio Sofield created the interiors.
Skyscrapers that are supertall are those that stand between 984 and 1,969 feet (300 and 600 meters) tall. The Brooklyn Tower, another SHoP structure in New York City, reached its peak earlier this year.
Following severe weather that battered the city in February 2022, tales of ice falling from both skyscrapers made news.
